Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- One of our big tenants is to build community, and community can be defined in so many different ways.
It's not just people in the JCC, it's not just the Jewish community.
It's people that share interest in life experiences.
Under One Roof is a new artistic way for us to involve the community, to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot, which is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the fall harvest.
When Jews wandered in the desert, they built temporary dwellings and we've done an artistic interpretation of this inside our auditorium.
We reached out to several different organizations to create a piece of artwork around a common theme in that we use that artwork to decorate our Sukkah.
So it's an installation of 40 pieces of art with an artist's statement next to it because I think the meaning behind each one of these pieces is so important and it forms the walls of a Sukkah.
You walk into this space that's very rustic feeling but it's also got this amazing artwork that tells a theme to it.
This year we chose community because we've made it such a big effort in what we do every day at the center and we feel like it's a way we build community with all these organizations that we probably wouldn't have contact with otherwise.
- The Centennial Park Conservancy's, Kidsville has participated in the Under One Roof project for several years now, and it's really exciting to get to have that chance, for not only your organization to have that artistic expression to tell other people about what you do and how you do things.
Our canvas that just had a simple image of the Parthenon to represent the great lawn of Centennial Park, where we gather community for special events, children got to scribble all over it and then we made two panels that were identical.
We did a color wash. Those images then were cut into strips and woven together representing the 3D effect of not only the artistic process but also the process of community gather together that our stories overlap, intermingle.
Then the next organization that you see next to you and then around you and across from you that you're seeing all those stories at the same time.
You not only see the story of your fellow colleagues so it truly embodies the theme of community that you're getting to see everyone come together because art does that so well.
